About us

A local practice that explains first.

North Beach Dental Surgery is a small general dental practice looking after children, adults and older patients from our surgery in central North Beach. This page explains who we are, how we make decisions with you and what happens when your care needs someone else.

Who we are

We are a general dental practice. Day to day, that covers check‑ups and cleans, fillings and other repairs, replacing missing teeth, cosmetic treatment and urgent appointments when something goes wrong.

We stay small on purpose. A smaller team means fewer handovers, a calmer waiting room and more time to talk with each person in the chair. Most of the people we see live or work nearby, and many come to us as a whole household.

Most x‑rays, including the OPG, which shows the whole jaw in one wide image, can be taken on site during your visit. Treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic where it is needed, and we explain what you are likely to feel before we begin.

Listening, then laying out the options

Every appointment starts with listening. We ask what you have noticed, what worries you and what you would like from the visit, because those answers shape everything that follows.

When we find something, we show you where it is, often on your x‑rays, and explain what is going on in plain English. Then we set out the realistic choices, including keeping an eye on it where that is reasonable, along with what each option involves in time, comfort and cost.

You are never asked to decide in the chair. Some people like to go ahead straight away; others want to read the plan at home, check with their fund or talk it over with family. Either is fine with us.

What family‑owned looks like day to day

Being family-owned shows up in small, practical ways. The person who answers your call is often the same person who greets you at the desk, and the dentist who plans your treatment is usually the one who carries it out and reviews it later.

It also lets us set our own pace. We plan appointments with time for questions, so explanations don’t get squeezed out by the clock. Our recommendations are based on what we see in your mouth and what you tell us you want, and we are comfortable saying when something doesn’t need treatment at all.

From toddlers to grandparents

For very young children, early visits are mostly about getting comfortable: a look at the chair, counting teeth and practical advice for parents on brushing and snacks. Teenagers bring their own questions, from sports mouthguards to wisdom teeth and keeping teeth healthy through busy school years.

For adults, the focus is often on keeping natural teeth healthy and repairing wear before it turns into a bigger job. Older patients may need more help with gum health, a dry mouth caused by medicines, dentures or implants, and we try to adjust appointments around mobility, hearing or other needs.

Seeing several generations of a family can also help us notice patterns, such as a family tendency towards gum problems, so prevention can start earlier.

A neighbourhood practice

We think of ourselves as part of the neighbourhood. Our patients include young families, school students, working adults, retirees and people who have just moved to the area.

Being close to home matters for dental care. Regular check‑ups are easier to keep when the surgery is a short trip away, and if a tooth starts hurting on a weekday or a Saturday morning, help isn’t far off. We also see plenty of people from the neighbouring suburbs; our areas page lists them.

Keeping our knowledge current

Dental materials, techniques and clinical guidelines change over time. Every dentist registered in Australia must complete continuing professional development, and we see that requirement as a starting point rather than a box to tick.

That learning shows up in practical ways: updated advice on fluoride and children’s toothpaste, changes in how gum disease is managed and clearer ways of explaining options. When guidance changes, we tell you. If something we suggested a few years ago is no longer the recommended approach, we will explain what has changed and why. We are also happy to talk through something you have read online and explain where the evidence currently stands.

When we refer you on, and why

We provide a wide range of general dentistry here, but some problems are better handled by a registered specialist with additional training in one area. Referring you is part of good care, not a sign that something has gone wrong.

When we refer, we explain why, send your relevant notes and x‑rays with your consent, and keep looking after your routine care before and after the specialist’s part is done. We can also arrange 3D imaging elsewhere when standard x‑rays can’t show enough detail.

Common reasons we refer include:

  • Root canals in teeth with complex anatomy, or redoing an earlier root canal: a registered specialist in endodontics
  • Advanced or fast-progressing gum disease: a registered specialist in periodontics
  • Difficult wisdom teeth or surgery close to nerves or the sinus: a registered specialist in oral surgery
  • Braces and other orthodontic treatment: a registered specialist in orthodontics

Common questions

Are you a specialist practice?

No. We are a general dental practice, and the care we provide is general dentistry. When a problem needs a registered specialist, we will tell you why and arrange the referral.

Will you tell me if a treatment can wait?

Yes. Part of explaining your options is being clear about what is urgent, what can be monitored and what is optional. Your dentist will also explain what is likely to happen if you wait, so you can weigh it up.

Can I get a second opinion before going ahead?

Of course. You are welcome to take your treatment plan to another dentist, and you can ask us for copies of your x‑rays and records to take with you.

Can I book my family’s appointments together?

Often, yes. Tell the front desk who needs to be seen and we will try to book the appointments one after another, so the family makes one trip instead of several.

What can I do if I’m unhappy with my care?

Please talk to us first, as most concerns can be sorted out with a conversation. If you are still not satisfied, you can contact the Health and Disability Services Complaints Office in WA or make a notification to AHPRA.
